CHAPTER TEN: DARKNESS
I didnât know what I had stepped into, but it sure smelled nice. Tonight had been long, and although I promised Ashley, I would stay out of the club, I couldnât ignore Deb when she clearly needed my help. When she called me sounding worried, I knew something was off.
Deb was smart, she knew all of the girls, and she knew their patterns, and when Giselle didnât show up for her shift, she was worried. Giselle, as silly as that girl could sometimes be, was all about her paper, so Deb instantly knew something was off and called me. Once we met up, we went over Giselleâs place and found her on the ground, beaten up. She swore it was some dude that sheâd been messing with, but I knew there was more to it. She wasnât the kind of girl to let someone push her around, especially not some no name dude. She had three brothers who would have gladly kicked his ass, so I knew that wasnât the case.
After leaving Giselleâs place, Deb asked if I was okay with stopping by the club and as wrong as I knew it was, I agreed. I couldnât lie, I did miss the club some, but I knew deep down that my real reason for going was to catch a glimpse of Angel.
It had been a few days since I talked to my mom, and although Iâd decided to give this thing with Ashley a fair shot, I found myself in situations where I was hoping I could see Angel. I didnât try to; I didnât want to complicate things, but just seeing her ignited things in me that I knew I shouldnât feel for a person I hardly knew.
I didnât know her, and yet, I felt as if Iâd known her all my life. I had to believe the girl who I got so attached to and almost threw away my marriage for was real. I remembered what Ashley said, and maybe some of it was true, but I couldnât believe that Angel would keep something so big from me. Weâd already shared so much. So much that she didnât have to share.
As I walked through the house, I saw candles flickering in the bedroom. I loved my wife, I swear I did, but I was so far from in the mood for sex, it wasnât funny. I didnât know what was up, I always wanted her, but something was bothering me. I couldnât shake the feeling that something was wrong.
Normally, this wouldnât bother me so much, but being away from the club, I felt responsible. If I was there, I would have been able to control things. Mike called last week to tell me he thought shit was going down there behind the scenes because of the hushed whispers he had been walking in on between the girls. He was pretty in tune with everyone there, and he said Giselle had been acting weird, and what was even crazier was the fact that she had actually been nice to Angel.
